The Strength of our Nation: Upholding Legal Immigration and American Values
By Saikiran Kolavennu, President, North Carolina Asian Indian Association (NCAIA)
America has long been built on the hard work, determination, and resilience of immigrants who came here seeking opportunity, freedom, and a better future. From constructing railroads and cultivating farmlands to founding tech startups and leading in medical innovation, immigrants have played a pivotal role in shaping our nation’s identity and prosperity. Today, legal immigration continues to be a powerful engine for economic growth and global competitiveness—bringing in highly skilled, law-abiding individuals who contribute immensely to our communities, institutions, and industries.
As President of the North Carolina Asian Indian Association (NCAIA), a non-profit, non-partisan organization, I am proud to represent a diverse community of Indian Americans who are committed to upholding the values of citizenship, service, and civic engagement. NCAIA firmly supports legal immigration and the rights of those who enter and live in this country lawfully. We also recognize the need for robust immigration enforcement—such as recent ICE operations—that target individuals who are in violation of the law. These actions, when focused on illegal activity, help maintain the integrity of our immigration system and ensure fairness to those who follow the legal path.
I appreciate those who have taken the time to engage with the recent article published by ABC11. I want to be very clear that at no point have I supported illegal immigration—nor was that ever my intent during my interview. As President of NCAIA, my role is to represent the voices of our law-abiding, legal immigrant community, advocating for their contributions and concerns, especially in light of recent events. My intent was to foster constructive dialogue and ensure our community feels informed and supported.
NCAIA and I strongly support legal immigration and the laws of this country. We also support enforcement efforts that address unlawful presence in the U.S. My comments were aimed at ensuring that such actions are communicated clearly to the public and that legal immigrants are not caught up in fear or confusion. It is unfortunate that some individuals are choosing to misrepresent my words, but I remain committed to standing by the values of legality, fairness, and civic responsibility. I encourage those with questions to have a conversation—not to jump to conclusions.
Our nation's immigration laws are shaped through policies debated and enacted by Congress, reflecting the will and security needs of the American people. It is through this democratic process that we must continue to evolve our immigration system—to protect our borders, honor the rule of law, and preserve the opportunities that have drawn millions to our shores for generations. As we move forward, it is essential to remember that supporting legal immigration is not just about policy—it is about investing in the continued strength, innovation, and diversity that define the American dream.
